What is Met Gala?
The Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is the biggest event on the fashion fundraising calendar. Founded by the famous fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the benefit was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York’s high society for the newly opened Institute. In its modern incarnation, the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition which is held after the red carpet event. The night begins with a cocktail hour, in which guests walk the red carpet and explore the new exhibition, before sitting down to dinner and the evening’s performance.
What is Camp: Notes on Fashion?
2019’s theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion. But, what does it mean? In layman’s language, it means being extra AF. Susan Sontang describes Camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration”. But she originally was inspired from 17th century and the queers. The definition of Camp has changed over the years. It is now a form of expressing instability and chaos through fashion. It can be theatrical, it can be ironic, it can even be humorous, but no matter what, camp is a crucial way of capturing and expressing the zeitgeist of any time period in culture. It is a kind of escape from the real life.
Who is the chairperson of Met Gala?
Since 1995, the event has been chaired by US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who enlists public figures to serve as her co-chairs. This year’s co-chairs were Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles and Serena Williams.
BEST LOOKS OF 2019
Billy Porter arrived at The Met Gala dressed as a gilded and glittery Egyptian Pharaoh. He was carried by a few shirtless men to the red carpet and then he suddenly unfurled a pair of golden wings as he walked. Billy Porter previously stunned the red carpet when he wore a Christian Siriano gown at 2019 Academy Awards. His over-the-top look was inspired by Diana Ross, Cleopatra and Cher. While, the Blonds were inspired by Ballroom Fixture by Pepper La Beija.
Can Lady Gaga ever be non-dramatic or extra? NEVER. Isn’t that what makes her stand out? This Met, Lady Gaga had four outfit changes. Brandon Maxwell designed a pink cape dress with a 25 foot long train which she casually stripped down on the pink carpet-into the ultimate embellished black bikini.
Katy Perry took the theme super-duper seriously. She came dressed up as a human chandelier this year! Designer Jeremy Scott took inspiration from Balls and Chandeliers. Scott told Vogue it took his team six weeks just to place thousands of Swarovski crystals on the dress. Then they used actual chandelier parts and created a corset with two hidden battery packs so the outfit actually functions as a light fixture. Isn’t she literally LIT?
The 21 year-old business mogul made everyone’s head turn as she made an entrance at the gala wearing a custom-made lavender feathered gown and a matching wig. Her dress was made of interlaced crystal mesh, Swarovski crystals and ostrich feathers and removable, large feathered sleeves. The Kar-Jenners have never ever failed to make us drop our jaws with their looks.
This 23 year-old Riverdale star came to the ball looking like a princess IRL. She wore a Jean Paul Gauliter dress and Jimmy Choo heels for her debut. Her teal-coloured dress made her look like Tinkerbell sprinkling some fairy dust on people. Madelaine’s look was finshed off by some cotton-candy coloured eye shadow and cherry lips, she wore her hair sleek and long with bangs.
HARRY STYLES AND ALESSANDRO MICHELE
Harry Styles walked the red carpet with Gucci’s creative head Alessandro Michele. They looked like a stylish match made in heaven. Harry and Alessandro ofcourse wore Gucci for the big night. Harry wore a black jumpsuit which had a sheer top with a pussy bow. He also wore a pearl drop earrings and a lot of rings to complete his look while Alessandro wore a bright reddish-pink outfit with a lot of ruffles.
Lana Condor channelled her inner fairy in this Giambattista Couture cotton candy-coloured outfit. Oh boy, I am in love with this outfit. This off-shoulder, tulle train, poof sleeves and light weight fabric dress made Lana’s first ever Met look a huge success! But this wasn’t effortless for Lana as she lost her phone in her huge dress (true story).
Serena Williams took her love for sneakers to a whole new level when she wore sneakers underneath her Atelier Versace gown. This co-host of Met is known for her love for sneakers. Don’t you remember her embellished Nike Sneakers that she wore for her wedding? For her Met look she wore Nike x Off-White Air Force One that matched her Versace dress. This look is undoubtedly the best!
Gigi Hadid looked like an Ice Princess. The model stepped out on the pink carpet in a white, silver and gold streaked catsuit, with a matching headpiece and coat adorned with feathers, all designed by Michael Kors who is also her date for the evening. The model also added crystal hoops and elongated long lashes to make sure to look over-the-top at Met.
Cardi B’s red feather Thom Browne gown steals the Met Gala. This Thom Browne dress featured puffy coque feathers on her shoulders that took 3,000 hours and 35 people to create this wonder that hugged the rapper’s body. She also wore a matching hand-embroidered headpiece with a bulge bead detailing.
Fairy tales are real. I am truly convinced about it after seeing Zendaya. She looked like Cinderella on the pink carpet. She wore a powder-blue coloured princess dress which was made by her by Tommy Hilfiger. She made sure to look like Cinderella as she completed her look with a blonde updo. She also dropped her glass shoe on the pink carpet.
